The Lunch Pail Defense Scholarship

Our way of giving back to the community

Here are some of the organizations we have and continue to support.

Purpose: The purpose of the Lunch Pail Defense Scholarship fund is to consolidate the multiple charity and organization-related donations the LPD and Coach Foster has contributed to thus far into a single and more direct contribution back into the community which has supported Coach Foster throughout his 21+ years in Blacksburg.

Mission: The creation of a scholarship directly affects the local community by focusing on the development and maturation of our local children, helping those who strive for excellence achieve their goals that will ultimately offer better results in the community in the future.

The publicity of such a scholarship will also positively affect Coach Foster, Virginia Tech and the LPD and its sponsors, by increasing the positive image of the University, its staff and programs as well as the local communities.

About the Scholarship

*THIS IS NOT AN ATHLETIC AWARD, NEITHER ASSOCIATED WITH NOR BENEFITED BY COACH FOSTER, VIRGINIA TECH OR ANY OF ITS PROGRAMS.

The Award: our goal for the LPD Scholarship is to offer an award to 4 (four) winners (2 males, 2 females), selected from the pool of applicants from the 9 (nine) New River Valley (NRV) schools listed below. The LPD and its sponsors will create additional goals each year to increase the target amount of the award each year. As our goals are met throughout the year through sponsoring this scholarship program, the LPD reserves the right to adjust the scholarship award amount per student in conjunction with the growing amount of donations or sponsorships collected.

NRV High Schools:

Target Student: “The combined school and extra-curricular activities prove this student to be an overall outstanding citizen, usually excels and goes above and beyond the call of duty, and one that otherwise may experience financial difficulties paying for college tuition, texts and board.”

‘Character’ will be a major factor in the judgment of this individual. The student as well as his/her references will be expected to provide written examples of the students’ character. There shall be a minimum of 2 references, 1 school reference (coach, official, teacher, counselor)  and a minimum of 1 external reference (church, community service, sports, other activities outside of school). Note: If a coach is selected to provide a reference for the student, NCAA officials would like one additional reference, that being a non-coach adult.

Qualifications:

1. 2.5 minimum GPA (copy of high school transcript required)
2. Proof of college acceptance (address, date)
3. School contact (high school) for follow up
4. College contact(s) – possible scholarship paid to student’s account
5. LPD Scholarship questionnaire complete
6. Minimum of two written references complete (from 'LPD questionnaire')
7. Application deadline: per high school - TBA

Decision Panel: A panel, consisting of a minimum of 5 (five) local business owners/managers/leaders, will be formed to judge the proposed candidates and decide 1 (one) award winner from each of the 9 (nine) schools. The LPD will take every action necessary to approve a diverse, fair-minded and non-biased team to form this panel. The panel will not accept monetary or other gifts for this service, other than to be recognized for their contribution to the community and to LPD. Coach Foster or any members of LPD, will not sit on the panel. The panel shall also be responsible for its own organization to facilitate meeting times and locations, agendas, meeting notes, etc. Scholarship contributors will have the opportunity to be part of this panel.
